Reflective jacket or reflective patch for clothing – repair textiles and add reflective details at the same time

Every autumn, the same thing happens. Just a moment ago, evening walks took place in daylight, and suddenly you find yourself standing in the hallway dressed head to toe in black in the middle of the November darkness. Adding more reflective details sounds like a good idea, but do you really need to buy an entirely new reflective jacket?

Not necessarily. If your current outdoor jacket, trousers or backpack still works perfectly well, you can add reflective details to it with a reflective patch, for example. At best, you can solve two problems at once: cover a small hole or worn area and add a reflective detail to your clothing.

When is reflective clothing a good choice, and when could reflective stickers, tape or fabric patches be a more practical option?

Reflective jacket or reflective details?

A reflective jacket or other ready-made reflective clothing can be a convenient choice when you are already looking for new outerwear and want reflective details to be part of the garment's original construction and design. For example, if you regularly run or cycle in the dark, reflective details may be an important factor when choosing what to wear.

But if you already have a perfectly good jacket that keeps out the wind, rain and sleet just as it should, there may be no need to replace it simply to get more reflective details.

Reflective elements can be added to existing clothing or gear using reflective tape, sew-on reflective fabric patches or self-adhesive reflective patches.

This is especially handy when the garment already needs a little repair: one patch, two purposes.

A reflective patch repairs and adds a reflective detail to clothing

Small holes and signs of wear on outdoor clothing usually appear exactly where garments work the hardest: sleeves, elbows, knees and trouser legs. An outdoor jacket might catch on a branch, while children's outdoor clothes seem to find every fence, rock and sharp corner.

In situations like these, a reflective patch can be a practical alternative to a regular repair patch.

FabPatch™ Reflective patches are attached by rubbing, so you don't need a sewing machine or special craft skills to make a repair. Simply place the patch over the hole or worn area to cover the damage while adding a reflective detail to the garment.

And there is no need to hide the repair. A reflective patch is allowed to stand out, turning a small hole into an intentional design detail.

Please note that a reflective FabPatch™ is not personal protective equipment and does not replace an official reflector.

Reflective sticker or reflective tape for clothing?

People often talk about reflective stickers, although a product designed for clothing is not quite the same as an ordinary sticker intended for a hard surface.

When choosing reflective material for clothing, always check that the product is specifically designed for textiles and suitable for the intended use. Clothing bends, stretches, rubs against other surfaces and goes through the wash, so it behaves very differently from a hard surface such as a bicycle frame.

Reflective tape can also work for certain applications, but always check the product instructions to make sure the material is suitable for the particular garment or piece of gear.

If you also want to repair a hole or worn area, a reflective FabPatch™ designed specifically for textile repair is a high-quality solution.

Where can you place a reflective patch?

When deciding where to place a patch, consider both the area that needs repairing and the overall look of the garment. If you are covering a hole, the damage naturally determines the first location. If you are simply adding reflective details, you have more freedom.

On a jacket, reflective details can be added to areas such as the sleeves, hem or sides. Reflective material can also be added to the lower part of trouser legs.

Reflective details can even be added to gloves, provided that their material is suitable for the patch.

It can help to step back and look at the garment from a little further away before deciding on placement. A repair can follow a seam, mirror a detail on the opposite side of the garment or deliberately stand out.

Turn an existing backpack into a reflective backpack

The same idea works for gear. A reflective backpack does not necessarily have to be made entirely from reflective material.

If your everyday or outdoor backpack has a surface suitable for reflective patches, you can add reflective details to selected areas. At the same time, you can cover a small worn spot or hole.

This can be useful for school backpacks, commuting bags and outdoor gear. A running backpack can also be given extra reflective details if you otherwise like its original design but feel it could use a little more reflectivity.

Always consider the surface material of the backpack and make sure the repair product is suitable for it before attaching the patch.

Add reflective details to dog clothing and gear with reflective patches

On walks in the dark, you can add reflective details not only to your own clothing but also to your dog's clothing and gear. Reflective patches can be used to customise dog jackets, raincoats and other textile gear, adding reflective details exactly where you want them.

A reflective dog jacket doesn't necessarily mean buying a completely new jacket. If your dog's current jacket is still in good condition and the material is suitable for patching, you can add reflective details to areas such as the sides or back. Different shapes and patterns can also give your dog's clothing and gear a more personal look.

FabPatch™ Reflective patches are attached by rubbing, with no sewing required, making it easy to customise your dog's textile gear. If a jacket or another piece of gear has a small hole or worn area, a reflective patch can also cover the damage and help extend the product's lifespan.

Please note that a reflective FabPatch™ is not personal protective equipment and does not replace a proper reflector or light designed for dogs.

A women's reflective jacket isn't the only option

There are plenty of reflective clothing options available today, but sometimes the situation is simple: your favourite jacket is still your favourite jacket.

If you're searching for a women's reflective jacket mainly because your current jacket lacks reflective details, consider whether you could add them to the garment you already own.

The shape and placement of a reflective patch can become part of the garment's design. It can create a bold graphic detail or cover that small tear that otherwise catches your eye every time you put on your jacket.

Visible mending can therefore be intentionally visible – quite literally this time.

Reflective clothing can also be created by customising what you already own

Clothes don't have to stay exactly as they were when they left the shop. A good jacket, pair of trousers or backpack can be adapted as your everyday needs change.

Maybe you now commute by bike. Your child has started walking to school. Your evening walks continue throughout the darker months. Or perhaps you've simply realised that a black jacket + black trousers + November makes for an almost too successful camouflage outfit.

In that case, reflective clothing can also mean adding reflective details that suit your style to something you already own.

FabPatch™ Reflective is made in Finland and is designed for situations where you want to repair textiles easily while adding a reflective detail alongside your official reflectors. It attaches by rubbing, so no sewing equipment is needed to repair small areas of damage. Repairs are easy to make at home, and FabPatch™ is also convenient to take along to the cottage, on hikes or when travelling.

A good jacket can keep going for longer. If a small hole appears in a sleeve, trouser leg or backpack, you can repair it before the damage grows. And when the repair is allowed to stand out, a reflective patch can make fixing things a little more fun.

Please note that FabPatch™ is not personal protective equipment and does not replace an official reflector.
